Dear Friend,
Aphasia’s onset is as instant as a stroke and its aftermath strikes at the core of the human spirit by disabling self-expression and self-worth. We know that this devastating disorder knows no boundaries of age, gender, wealth, race or profession. As Board members, we have stated, “If I ever have a stroke and acquire aphasia, I want the Aphasia Center of West Texas here for me.”
In five short years, the Aphasia Center of West Texas has proven that not only can life go on, but with educated loved ones and a community of peers, an individual with aphasia can thrive rather than just survive.
Now the Center itself is facing an important challenge. Requests for help doubled in 2008. We had a building that could not support further growth. After much deliberation, our Board decided to sign a lease when the ideal building became available. We have undertaken increased expenses and a capital campaign at a time when our economy is uncertain, personal retirement funds are shrinking and fundraising endeavors in the Permian Basin are at an all-time high.
As leaders of the Aphasia Center, we not only watch the people we serve excel against all odds, we have felt a kind of grace traveling with the Center as it has been blessed over and over.
We hope the day never comes that you or your loved one can’t speak, read or write normally, but if it does, we all want the Aphasia Center right here in West Texas. Please give so there can be Future Hope and Room for Expression.
