Our Challenge

The Aphasia Center’s governing Board became increasingly concerned about the organization’s ability to fulfill the demand for services as requests more than doubled in 2008. Plus, office space designed for four was utilized by seven. Large classes were juxtaposed to the administrative offices with no privacy for phone conversations or new client consultations. Every available area of the building was used.

The facility became inefficient for the staff and inadequate for the current level of need, much less the needs of future survivors and their families.

Responding to the Challenge

The Center could no longer function at its previous space and the Board knew it would not be prudent to rent each month on a long-term basis. The renovated Thomason building provides the ideal location and space to offer lives worth living to aphasia survivors throughout the Permian Basin. Excitement is building and we need your help with the dream of owning the beautiful brick building at 5214 Thomason Drive.

Campaign Goal

  • Building Purchase $695,000
    Phase 1 Renovations $535,000
    Phase 2 Renovations $214,000
Fees, Permits and Soft Costs $66,000
    Contingency (10%) $50,000
    Endowment $250,000
    TOTAL $1,810,000

New Facility

The New Facility

The ACWT expansion committee, after consulting with community leaders, made the decision to lease the building. Formerly the Parkhill, Smith and Cooper architecture firm, the building meets all long-term criteria with convenient access to surrounding communities throughout the Permian Basin. With 6300 sq. ft. of programming, administrative, conference and storage space, this wonderful environment will serve 30 clients at any given time.

External renovations will include:

  • Safer ADA ramps with additional handicap parking.
  • Enclosed garage for secure vehicle and garden supply storage.
  • Two new air conditioning units, replacing two inadequate units.
  • A fence added to the building's back yard with raised gardens, outdoor seating and overhead awnings.
  • Exploring solar panels for long-term reduced utility costs.

For continued growth, internal renovations will include:

  • One additional ADA restroom with current restrooms ADA compliant.
  • An additional programming Conversation Room converted from two storage spaces.
  • A back door for easy access to the patio and garden.
  • A pass-through bar and window added between the multipurpose room and kitchen.
  • Sky lights added to bring the outdoors in!
